Friar Lawrence, who sympathizes with Romeo and Juliet and marries them, is a Franciscan priest of the Roman Catholic Church. Do you agree with his decision to secretly marry the couple? Why?
I do agree with his decision. I too would marry them if I had the power because they were madly in love and no one should tell them otherwise. I think that love is a powerful thing, it can bring people closer. I believe that this is why Friar Lawrence marries them. He knows that this will bring peace to the Capulet and Montague families. He does the absolute best thing which is an attempt to bring both families together in harmony. What he does not know is that the price to pay for this is the lives of Romeo and Juliet.
I don't agree with his decision. Didn't he say in the beginning of his big speech that Romeo had just been "in love" with Rosaline? Romeo changes his feeling too fast and goes to extremes. He had just met Juliet and all of a sudden, they were madly in love. How many words had they said to each other before the balcony scene? I think they went way too fast.
Friar Lawrence knew Romeo and his personality. He should have really thought it through and learned from past experience with him. He's probably been marrying people for a long time and he knows most of the effects. I understand he was doing it for their sake and their city's. I just think he should have thought about it longer.
I think Friar Lawrence acted to please. So what? He married them. They're madly in love and they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Yeah, I agree that little dramatic Romeo has his infatuation mood swings, but he can only learn from his mistakes. Marrying them doesn't make a difference to the Friar. If he marries them and they break up, oh well. They'll from it. If he doesn't marry them, you'll have two dramatic lovestruck teens who will be depressed. Okay they're parents like hate each other. They'll run away. You know teens and their hormones. There's a risk in everything they do. But isn't love itself a risk? You have to take risks for love. So over all, I think the Friar did a good job in marrying them. Right on.
I don't exactly know if Friar Lawrence made the right decision. It might seem to most people that he didn't because of how Romeo and Juliet eventually end up. But I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if he didn't marry them. Would Romeo and Juliet actually have a chance to live or would they kill themselves anyway because they couldn't be together.
Romeo and Juliet were in love more than anything else. Friar Lawrence did what he thought was right at the time. He truly wanted to see the families make up because as a priest he hated the violence between them. I think overall he made the best decision he could but we never know what could have happened if he didn't.
In a way I do agree because if two people truely love each other then they should be together, so their relationship can grow. But I am one of those people who can't lie, not to my parents, my friends or anyone for that matter so I don't agree with the fact that he lied about it and married them behind everyones back.
I really agree with Tiffany when she said how Romeo had just been in love with Rosaline and was all of the sudden in love with Juliet, even though they had barely spoken.
I absolutely love what Christine wrote. she's right love its self is a risk and if Friar Lawrence wouldn't have married them then they would've eloped.
I agree with what Friar Lawrence did. First, it killed the rivalry. It is a symbolic way of ending the opposition.
Secondly, I agree because it really isn't really Friar's right to not marrying them because of a reason like such. He has some rights to stop it. But, he can't stop them they are "in love."
Responses: 1. I agree with everything Don said. Good job donny (: 2. I also agree with Tiffany but I honestly don't see that its the Friar's fault. 3. I agree with Christine, if the Friar didn't marry them they would have runaway.
I think that everyone is going to agree with him but i have to disagree. I mean what was he thinking? Marrying two kids who change their minds every other day? Really it was a stupid move. How could he think that a marriage was going to resolve decades of hatred? For all he knew this marriage would have made things a battrillion times worse. What he did end up doing was killing them both. And yeah, maybe they would have run away but they would have come running back home. Mr dramatic Romeo couldn't survive a week without his royalty treatment. If he wouldn't have married them, none of the tragedy would have happened and they both would have gone on with their lives :p
I disagree with Tiffanyc. I believe that Romeo's sight of Rosaline was overshadowed, and it was not true love. I think up until he met Juliet, he was living a lie.
I agree with Khriss. I think that the only logical choice would be to marry them. If he would not have, he would have regretted destroying the possibility of two lovers being able to be united as one.
I agree with Stacy. When a couple is in love no force in the world shall break their passion for one another. His best choice was to marry them with the incentive of also bringing peace between the two families.
I do not agree with the decision of doing it so secretive . He is a catholic priest he should very strict. He also doesnt know their love that well and has never seen them that much. He should make sure with such a big decision. I do though think that it will turn out good or should turn out good because it will bring the families together for their childrens sake and it will end the fued. But i am fifty fifty in the whole decision.
Response 1:I agrre with tiffany they went way too fast. Response 2:I agree with Kriss the only way is by learning from mistakes but...the friar shouldve given more time. Response 3:I agree with victoria it is totally rediculous to marry them.
I agree with what Friar Lawrence decided to do. He should have married them. I would have done the same thing. Who is he to stand in the way of two people who want to get married. Besides, it might end the feud between families.
I agree that it should have been done secretly, because if it were not done in secret then the families would just take their children away before the ceremony even begins. This way at least when the families find out, romeo and juliet will already be married and un seperatable.
I'm not very sure about his decision. Both sides have good points. I don't think he should have married them because Romeo was "in love" with Rosaline just a day ago. Also, their parents should know about it. Yet, Romeo and Juliet have the right to marry if they choose, they need to decide for themselves. Also, this was a good try for ending the feud. In the end, I probably wouldn't have married them. I would have told them to try to talk to their parents and explain. If that didn't work, then maybe they could have tried something else.
1. I agree with tiffany because I too think Romeo changes his feelings to fast and goes to the extreme. He changes his mind too much. 2. I agree with tiffany, I think Romeo and Juliet moved way too fast. 3. I agree with Amanda. I wouldn't agree with the fact that he married them behind their parents backs.
I personally do agree with his decision because if I myself had the power to marry a couple, i would. Especially if they were madly in love like Romeo and Juliet were. Briniging to people together in marriage is a great power to have. He also knows that this might help bring the two families at peace for once.
I have a contridicting opinion on friar laurence decision. In a way,yes they were in love at first sight, but friar knows that Romeo is extremely emotional and moody. He treats love in a very nonchalant manner. But possibly friar could tell Romeo was in true love. Friar was killing two birds with one stone by marrying them: uniting them and their families even though that phrase doesn't seem appropriate. I agree with donny in it would possibly bring the families in harmony. Yet I also agree with tiffany in he shouldve thought it through. Christines post is just amazing.
If I had the power to do this, I would marry them both. If they are both in love with each other for real reason, I would so do it. Doing this would help bring peace unto both families and no one would have to suffer sine they are all related.
I agree with Don because marrying people from families who do not like each other would help bring each other closer.
I agree with Tiffany because Romeo just fallen in love with Rosaline, and now he is on to Juliet.
I also agree with what Christine wrote. Friar took risks to do this even thought it would cause trouble.
I think that Friar Lawrence made the right decision when he married Romeo and Juliet. He thought it would bring peace between the two feuding families. If he was truly a priest that believes in doing good, he would make the decision that is best for everybody. In this case, he did what was good for the Montegues and the Capulets. If it were me in his shoes, I probably would've made the same decision.
I disagree with Tiffany when she says that it wasn't the best thing if it cost Romeo and Juliet their lives. But no being on Earth could've predicted what ends up happening to the young couple. Besides, in the end of the story, the two families end their feud because of their deaths. I agree with Elizabeth in the fact that Friar Lawrence did what he thought was best at the time. Again, nobody could have predicted the end result of this marriage. I agree with Stacey when she says that he can stop the marriage, but he can't stop Romeo and Juliet from saying that they are in love.
I 100% agree with Friar Lawrence's decision to marry the two. I would marry them as well if I were in his position. How can someone stand in the way of love. Only Romeo and Juliet know how they feel about each other so how can he deny the love they have for each other. Although this could cause some trouble later on he did the right thing.
I agree with Stacey. Romeo & Juliet's getting hitched would kill the rivalry.. even though it's not for sure.
I disagree with victoria. Maybe he didn't marry them just becauce he thought marriage would resolve the "decades of hatred." Maybe he did it because he's a priest, and all religious people just want to see everyone happy. Being in love makes Romeo and Juliet happy. Happiness spreads, so there was a chance it could've solved the rivarly.
i disagree with amanda. marriage is a decision between you and the significant other. if you want to get married behind your parents back, then let it be. it's not like they have a say once you're over 18. you're an adult. if it goes wrong, you learn from it.
i do agree with him because he granted the wishes of two people. he wasn't just thinking of the two people, he put the better of two evils together and hopefully bring peace between the families.
although, i think he should of waited a little bit to marry them. he should of let them get to know them a little better first before he married them. if he would of waited, maybe they wouldn't of died.
I think that I can't agree or disagree with his decision. I think that it was great that Romeo and Juliet had someone to marry them since they were so in love. Friar Lawrence probably felt he should marry them for their love for one another.
On the other hand, marrying them wasn't the best thing. After their marraige, so many tragical things happened because of it. If it was me, I probably wouldn't have married the two.
I agree with Elizabeth. What would have happened if Friar Lawrence didn't marry Romeo and Juliet? Would they have killed themselves or would they have lived their lives without all the tragedy?
I agree with Amanda. I don't think that they should have lied behind their parents' backs and everyone elses to get married.
I agree with Vicky. If Friar Lawrence wouldn't have married Romeo and Juliet, all of the tragedies might have not occurred.
RESPONSES: 1. I agree with Tiffany when she said that Romeo and Juliet went way too fast.
2. I have to disagree with Christine. I don't think that you have to "take risks for love." If two people really love each other, they don't have to take risks. They can take things as slow as they want and double check everything they do because after all, "they love each other."
3. I agree with Amanda how she says that they shouldn't have gotten married behind their parents' backs.
I know that Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet for a good reason, but he said himself that Romeo was being to rash. I believe that love is a powerful thing as well, but I don't really believe in love at first sight. I think that Romeo and Juliet should have been more responsible and thought it all through. Although I think this, I also think that Romeo and Juliet reserve the right to be rash. They aren't really too young to be married at the time, and should be allowed to make their own decisions, and perhaps their own mistakes. I don't think a priest should decide if they are allowed to be married, though perhaps he should have had them think it through more thoroughly.
I agree with Tiffany that they moved way too fast with their decision to get married. I disagree with Don and agree with Tiffany in that I think that Friar Lawrence was trying his best to bring peace between the two families, but if the end result is the death of three(including Tybalt) of the families members. I think that Christine makes a good point, that they would just do some other stupid thing if the Friar didn't marry them.
I agree with his decision. I would marry them in secret so that way no one would know. I think marriage is a very personal subject, so that is why doing it in secret is fine to me. I believe Friar Lawrence marries them, so that way he can bring peace to both families. I think he is doing this from the goodness of his heart. But i think that he didnt think to far into future about how this would affect Romeo and Juliet later on.
Responses: I agree with don that marriage does bring a family closer. I agree with krhiss that Friar Lawrence aimed to please. I disagree with tiffany on the fact that she does not agree with Friar Lawrence's decision.
