I think that poems as old as The Odyssey are still valuable today for various reasons. Since it is an old poem that was written many years ago, people may treasure it for it's antiqueness. Others enjoy reading old literature written many years ago. Many people may also consider it as a "classic" work of literature.

Like Beowulf, The Odyssey is an epic story about a hero. People may find both of these works to be valuable because it gives them a sense of courage. Reading these epic stories may give them encouragement because of the superb heroes mentioned in these tales. Since these stories are very old, people treasure them. Some people may value these because they don't want to throw away the marvelous work of a talented author who lived years ago; they want him to be honored and respected.

There are a few reasons why I think The Odyssey is still valuable today. First, it was the first written form of literature that was written in a different chronogical order than occured. Next, the author was a very famous person whose dead and we cannot read anymore poems off. The Odyssey is a classic work of literature and it is something many people enjoy reading still today.

It is about a hero who goes out to sea and does not return home for ten years. It tells of his adventures and his obstacles and travels. It's a very interesting story. Honestly, I don't usually see stories written like this one anymore and I can see why people want to keep this writer's work. It's unique, old, a classic, and interesting to read

I agree with Alexis when she compares the Odyssey to Beowulf in saying that people do enjoy reading stories about heroes.

I agree with Melissa when she says that the death of the author would force us to read the only piece of literature that he wrote about.

Poems such as The Odyssey are very valuable. They offer an insight into the literature of past generations. Not only are they any ordinary past generations, but they are from a very long time ago. They are also valuable because they are of the few that have been found or known of. Since there are select few, those few are treated with great value and respect.
Poems such as these are also important for other reasons. They give guidelines for what a hero should be considered as. Even though everyone has their personal view of what a hero is, these poems give insight of the first heroic deeds.

Alexis- I agree with your whole writing. These poems must also give those written about much honor and courage.
Melissa- I agree that there are not many works like these so those that enjoy them, they are very valuable.
Alyse- I agree with you that people must enjoy reading about history and poems in one.

I agree with Alexis in the similarities between Beowulf and The Odyssey. These are both very good works of art. I definetly agree with her when she says, "Reading these epic stories may give them encouragement because of the superb heroes mentioned in these tales." I think that people would like to read about heroes and look up to them.

I strongly agree with alyse in two things. First when she said, "there are people that enjoy reading stories with a historical message in it as well as reading a poem that has a hero such as Odysseus in it." I think this makes a story more interesting for many readers. Next, I agree with her when she says, "Lastly it was the first written form of literature so people may treasure it and all its beauty." I agree with this because I think people would be interested in reading the first written form of literature and curious to see what it is like.

I agree with all of the following stefanieg said,"They offer an insight into the literature of past generations. Not only are they any ordinary past generations, but they are from a very long time ago. They are also valuable because they are of the few that have been found or known of. Since there are select few, those few are treated with great value and respect." I do think that it shows the insight of the past generations literature and the differences. Also since this is one of the few valuable ones because it is one of the few found. It makes it more unique then the others.

I think that a poem as old as the Odyssey is still valuable today for many reasons. One, is that it shows us a look into the past. it shows us what other civilizations in the past thought, wrote, and talked about. It gives insight into man's past.

Today, people still become inspired by this epic. Many sotries and plays written in our time do not trail far from where The Odyssey left off. We still believe in One Eyed monsters and creatures with many heads.

This epic shows us that the human mind is as imaginative as what it creates. This is why this epic poem will never die out; this is why The Odyssey will never get old.

I agree with Stefaine when she says that poems such as the Odyssey offer insight to literature of the past generation. Also, when she says that there are few poems that have been known of from that time.

I think that a poem as old as the Odyssey is still valuable today. The first reason being that it is basically the father of modern literature. It is an exquisite work of literature that people still refer to today. It is a classic and therefore highly valuable.

This epic poem is about a man named Odysseus that is trying to find his way back home to Ithaca. It is the tale of his journey which lasts ten years. This tale is exciting and interesting, so people would want to read it. The story has a great plot and it "keeps you on your toes." Writers don't come around like this often so i can definantly see why this poem is still valuable today.

This question kind of makes me feel like also answering why not just poems, but all old works of literature are still valuable today. I think this is because people have the curiosity to want to find out how our past was and why certain things happened. When something monumental i n history occurs, we document it. I think the poem is still valuable today because people want to read the work of an author who is not even the official author but it credited for it. They want to read about something as ancient as the Trojan War and they want to question in their minds whether it happened or not.
The poem is also valuable today because people know it's been passed by oral tradition through many generations before it was finally written down, and they want to read and find out what was so important about this story that hasn't died. People are also curious about why it is such a big mystery to see if Homer really is the author. Again, my main word is curiosity, which is also the main reason why I think a poem as old as The Odyssey is still valuable today.

I agree with gaby when he said that poems as old as The Odyssey give us insight into man's past.

I agree with melissa when she said that people read these types of poems because the author who wrote them has passed away, and they cannot read anymore works from them, except what they have left us.

It's obvious why "The Odyssey" is still famous today. This poem is one of the first forms of literature ever written down. Many writters look at the story of Odysseus and learn from it. It also sets a standard for writers and other storIes. Odysseus was the first ever hero that was known was written down. Because of this all other writers who want a hero now know the qualities that there hero needs to have to consider him a hero.
"The Odyssey" is the fatherof stories today. As the father and the example to other writers it has stated famous and well known for a long time.

I think a poem as old as the Odyssey is still valuable today for amany reasons. It tells as an old epic about a man journeys after home for ten years after a war. Many people still treasure this poem because of how old the story is.
Even though the story is during Greek mythology, it still tells about everyday life. Even though because of the mythicla creatures and gods we see in the novel,it still teaches the everyday lessons we all know. It helps give people a sense of knowing what it feels like to be in their situations.

ChelseaL said...

I agree with alexisv because the antiqueness is was helps this story become popular. This novel lives on because of when it was written in.

I also agree with melissa because it is a classic novel. Usually classic novels are remembered for their litary tales.

I agree with StefanieG because these novels are not ordinary. This novels may be from mythology, but when people read them, it may feel real to them.

In ancient times, people have had an unusual view of the world around them. People had a bad understanding of nature and how it worked so they labeled all natural things as a certain God. They believed in this, and i believe it is very creative, imaginative, and an interesting topic to look into. The Odyssey is based on stories of these Gods and other mystical creatures.
I think that the reason that this story is valuable, is because it is somewhat a telling of an ancient culture, and there intriguing beliefs. It deals with things we could not even think to be true, it is truly a remarkable poem. Its value is super important because not only is it the first written literature, but it is a piece of history. To me, it is a mind blowing, mystical story that has truly impressed me. This book has been passed down from generation to generation, because people were truly interested in reading such a mystical book of the past, which at some point in time, was believed true. I think that this book is still valuable today, because people like reading things, that open there minds to new thoughts, and more possibilities.

donw said...

I agree with alysem, because i too believe that The Odyssey was a remarkable book. I think it truly is a work of art that should be passed on throughout the rest of time. It is an amazing epic which enlarges a person's imagination, and allows them, to excel in thoughts of mysticism.

I agree with gabrield because The Odyssey is insight into the past. It does show how people used to live, and what they believed in. It is a great foundation for the imagination of mankind to grow off of because of its many unique points in reality. This is why The Odyssey is still valuable today.

I agree with amandal because i too believe that this poem is a classic. It portrays the true characteristics of what someone would think a hero is. I think it is a great epic because it has a series of different stories that show Odysseus facing many different obstacles in his path to return home.

I do think that an old poem can be valued today. First of all, it can be used to learn the history of the culture of the people. You can learn what their ideas about religion and gods were. There are many things we don’t know about the past and the culture of past civilizations. The Odyssey gives us some insight into the traditional thoughts and culture.
Secondly, it is considered a ‘classic’ work of literature. Many people enjoy reading this work. Thirdly, it tells a very exciting and interesting story that many people can immerse themselves in. The Odyssey has a hero that you can admire and as you read you hope that he will succeed. Homer wrote this story really well and you can take a lot out of it. You want to be as strong or smart as the hero but can still see that even amazing heroes have flaws.

I think that the poems we have been reading in class, such as The Odyssey, is still important today for many reasons. One of these values is historical value. Others, find it for entertainment.

Poems like these things are also used for guidelines. Guidelines to being hero, defending mystical creatures, things of that nature. These are my beliefs of why these poems are still in existence

The odyssey is an epic poem about a hero who tries to get back home to his family. People view this poem as a work of art or a work of history. Either way is why we still read and view the odyssey.

I think the Odyssey and other older poems are available today because of its entertainment value. In the old times, people used to spend their free time watching and listening to these stories. The stories spread and others from other countries cam to check it out. Many liked it and kept it going. It changed the way people look at stories.

These stories also have a sense of culture in it. It is treasured by the people it is written by because it gives them a sense of pride. Their feeling of their country is strengthened because of the way it is included in the story. People can't read it as often so when they do it changes their outlook. It brings them closer to their country and culture.

I agree with Alexis because she said the stories are like antiques.

I agree with Melissa that it is a classic work of literature.

I agree with Stefanie when she said that they are very valuable.

I think that a poem as old as The Odyssey is still valuable because of just that: it's so old. Old literature gives us small amounts of knowledge of what the past might have been like and how it relates to the present and the near future. As humans, we are interested in learning about past events. Althogh the types of past events that we are interested in may vary, we are still interested in the past in general nonetheless.
A poem like The Odyssey gives us bits and pieces of information that teaches us about the past and what the people of the time liked to write about. That is why, I think, a poem as old as The Odyssey is still valuable today.

I agree with Alexis saying that people may consider The Odyssey to be "a 'classic' work of literature."

I agree with Stefanie when she says that the select works of writing that are found are treated with respect since there a only a few very old works of literature that are still around today.

I agree with Gabriel in the fact that poems like The Odyssey and stories and plays today aren't much different.

old poems like the odyssey are the types of stories that are good enough to get passed down from generation to generation. after many yeears it becomes a classic and more and more people begin to know about it until its a story like the one of odysseus

its really hard for a story to become this popular though. the story needs to be catchy and as appealing now as it was 50 60 70 or 80 years ago. thats not very easy to do.
