In the first part of The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men encounter several obstacles that they must overcome. What kinds of obstacles do people today have to try and overcome?
People today have many obstacles they must overcome. Many are not as physically demanding as Odysseus's, but they are almost as impossible.
Today, although we may not want to realize it, many people struggle each day. Many people are starving to death and trying to survive in poor areas of the world. Others, that have mental illnesses, are trying to live normal lives when in reality not even their parents have hope for them.
Every day more and more people try to overcome these impossible, yet unavoidable, obstacles, and every day more and more people die trying to overcome them. But, every day some people, with help from God and the will to do good, some people survive.
There are many obstacls in today's world. Some like peer pressure, drugs, premarital sex, but that is mostly teens. Adults have obstacles to overcome as well. They have to make career decisions, take care of their kids (if they have), and overcome problems and occurences in the workplace and home life. They have to do the best job they can at everything they do because you only get one chance to do it right.
People struggle with their lives everyday. Odysseus was a man of many qualities and was protected by the most powerful god. He prayed and listened to him. In today's world, we still have the most powerful God but we chose not to listen to him. If we learned to listen and believe, we have a much easier and better life.
I agree wih Gabriel when he said that many people die trying to overcome their obstacles but with God, people survive.
People Today have to overcome lotz of obstacles. Many of which were not commmon at all back in the day. Now a days they are mostly social problems and obstacles. The common obstacles we go through today are hardly obstacles compared to back in the day.
Some of the obstacles we go thouggh are mostly social rejection,or living on the street poor. One obstacle that people might not see as an obstacle is being misunderstood for any reason.Drugs and peer pressure are others.:)
Obstacles have been around since just about forever. Whether it be to cross a river, or pay the rent, people are constantly faced with them. Also, they may be physical or mental. Neither is more difficult. I think depending on the age, people have different obstacles. For example, a baby may need to learn to walk.A teenager needs to get good grades as well as not cave into peer pressures. A working mother needs to balance work and a family. Whatever it is, it is an obstacles. But obstacles are always overcome. Tiffany- I never even considered comparing Odysseus's protection by Zeus to Jesus, but it is actually similar. Gabriel- I agree that obstacles are unavoidable and apart of everyday life. Marissa- I never realized most obstacles today are social while past ones are not.
People go through obstacles in life everyday. But the real challenge is how to overcome those obstacles. The obstacles people face today depends on the age. A child may need to overcome the obstacle of learning how to talk, walk, and learn. An adolescent may need to overcome the obstacle of peer pressure, getting good grades in school, and being active in sports. An adult needs to overcome the obsctales of raising a family, getting a good paying job, paying the rent and all the bills. Doing the shopping and taking care of the kids. But these obstacles are nothing compared to what other people in other countries have to go through. There are people starving and dieing of AIDS in Africa. People in the middle east have a huge obstacle: WAR. Countries in Asia also have to overcome the Tsunamies. In South America, the people have to go through floods, war, kidnappings, and murders. Here, in the US, we have one mayor obstacle right now which is the Economy. But, everything depends on how you overcome those obstacles and that you are able to move on with your life and learn from everything. It makes you a stronger person.
In modern day, many people face a lot of obstacles. Most, are psychological then physically. Many struggle with money, other people, and psychological concepts becoming there number ones.
Even though physically looks harder, psychological is menatlly way harder. It is sometimes impossible to get over. Physical actions either go away or doesn't really matter after a month.
People have to go through many different obstacles today. Some people have to go through emotional obstacles, and a lot of people have to go through physical obstacles as well.
A lot more people go through emotional obstacles. Many people are afraid of certain things like heights, hospitals, airplanes, and many more. Sometimes they have to learn to overcome that fear to be able to do whatever it is that their fear stops them from doing. Many people, especially girls, are afraid of getting hurt when it comes to relationships.
People with physical disabilities also have to overcome obstacles. People who are blind, deaf, or paralyzed have to learn how to cope with their lives and learn how to live the best that they can.
Today, people have to overcome many obstacles. Many people go through the same types of obstacles but each person is challenged differently. Some people have more difficult obstacles than others. Some obstacles are mental or spiritual while others are physical. Odysseus had to overcome physical obstacles. People today now also have mental and/or spiritual obstacles. For example, teenagers have to overcome peer pressure. Peer pressure involves many things such as drinking, drugs, gossiping, etc. They also have to focus on their grades and family. Adults have to deal with keeping up with their bills and parenting. There are also other obstacles such as people dying, starvation, and struggle in the economy. Many people also have obstacles in the way of their faith. There are also occasional obstacles such as having family issues or other social issues. Today, people have to overcome many obstacles and yet many people get stuck there are many others who have and can overcome their obstacles.
I agree with Tiffany when she states that people have to do the best job they can at everything they can because they only get one shot to do it right. This is why people try their best,it's very important.
P.S. I don't know what happened to my screename it has a smiley now. This is Melissa C.
I agree with Marissa when she says that now a days many obstacles are social problems. This is true. I also agree with her when she says that there are many obstacles today that were not common in the past. It goes to show that as time goes by, there will be more obstacles to overcome for people in life.
I agree with Melissa when she says that obstacles can make us stronger. I definetly agree because I think we can learn from our mistakes and from the ways we have overcome obstacles. The more obstacles that come our way,the more we learn.
When I first think of obstacles, I think of a teenager in driver's ed, attempting to get his or her license, trying to avoid the obstacles in her way. To her, these obstacles are cones and poles. I think our life is like one big Driver's Ed. Test. We're the driver, who's in control. Our teacher next to us is Jesus. We could choose to listen to him, or we could not. If we do, we'll avoid the obstacles. If we don't we'll most likely hit a cone or pass a stop sign. In our life, we have many obstacles. School, for kids, is a main place for obstacles. A test is an obstacle to overcome. Peer pressure to drink, do drugs and have sex are obstacles we must overcome too. We could either listen to Jesus as he steers us out of the way, or ignore his comments and live the consequence. Adulthood comes with the most obstacles. There's all the obstacles when you were a teen that come into play, but now there is also health, money, a career and kids to worry about to. We need to get over these everyday obstacles to live our life because that's what living is all about. Getting over the bad to be happy.
i agree with stef with her idea that obstacles are both physical and mental but i disagree on the fact that neither is more difficult. I think mental obstacles are much harder to overcome because it's something that could stay with you forever.
I agree with elizabeth. More people go through emotional obstacles than anything else. This is because our emotions are always changing and therefore make us vulnerable to more obstacles.
I agree with melissa =) that some obstacles are spiritual. Spiritual obstacles are one of the most serious. This is why we have so many martyred saints. They went through so many obstacles to keep their faith alive and strong.
Today many people are facing many different types of challenges.Whether the challenges may be physical, emotional,or logical we all have to find a way to overcome them.
Some challenges are loosing their houses especially with today's economic issues. The population of homeless people is increasing.People may have to deal with an extremely deadly illness or even a loss in the family. There are many more challenges that people face that many may be unaware of.But one thing we all know is that we may be able to avoid many problems but will always encounter some.
I agree with Elizabeth when she says,"A lot more people go through emotional obstacles. Many people are afraid of certain things like heights, hospitals, airplanes, and many more. Sometimes they have to learn to overcome that fear to be able to do whatever it is that their fear stops them from doing. Many people, especially girls, are afraid of getting hurt when it comes to relationships."
Many people today face many difficult obstacles every day. Many people are losing their homes and going into debt because of the bad economy. They struggle each day to keep their home and money to be able to support their families with food, water, shelter, and clothes. Some children suffer from child abuse; some people lose a lot that we don't realize.
Sometimes, we take for granted what we have and we don't look at the world around us and all that it is suffering, like wars, poverty, kidnapping, murder, crimes, disasters, etc. So many things happen every day that we are not aware of. People go missing every day; their family and friends go looking for them and that can take years and they usually don't find them. The news is a great example of some obstacles that people have faced. We just need to pray for these people so they can find an easy way out of their struggling.
People today have many obstacles that they must overcome. Problems can be economic, social ,and just passing school.
There are many economic obstacles a person must overcome. They have to find the money to pay bills, find jobs, pay for school, the list goes on and on. Unfortunately all we can do is make the best of it and put a smile on our faces. Bills are always going to keep on coming and nothing is going to change that.
Social obstacles come in all shapes and sizes, especially for our age group. Theres "issues" like fitting in, being cool, not being the loser-and my favorite-DOING WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING. Sometimes these things can be huge mental, physical, and emotional obstacles.
In conclusion, there are many obstacles people today have to try to overcome. These challenges are always going to be there so we just have to face them. We always have to remember that life isn't fair and that the world doesn't stop for anyone.
one of the main obstacles is rasicim and discrimination. there are people today who are very racist to many ethnic groups. those ethnic groups have to over come the harsh treatment.
people also have to overcome favoritism. in many cases, someone who doesn't perform as well as you do gets a certian advantage because they have so relation to the person giving the benefit. all we can do is sit there and deal with it.
In the world we live today, many people encounter different obstacles. Some of the encounters we see today are for things that we either want or need in life. If life, we go through many encounters . We want to to what it takes to overcome for the long run. The kind of obstacle we try to overcome of life's understanding. We try to acheive it, but something always comes in the way. It can be from choosing our careers to even thinking about things for tomorrow. But without God, it would be more complicated to surpass.
I agree with gabrield because many people struggle with obstacles everyday. most of them die from overcoming it, and that is all for nothing.
I also agree with tiffanyc. People struggle in life by making choices that will affect them. Your choices can cause an obstacle that depends on how good or bad the choices are.
I also agree with marissas. The obstable we have now are different than from what we have in the past. It may be the same values, but much more complicated.
throughout every day life there are many obstacles people have to over come. some more serious than others. to some people it might be like working to pay the bills and to some people an obstacle might be something as simple as getting throught their day. day by day people have diffrent struggles that they deal with but in life the small things can't bother you and whatever you do, you should do it with all your heart.
I really agree with tiff because yea us teens have diffrent obstacles to over come but so do adults and thats something that we seem to forget cause at this age a lot of teens think that they're the only ones with problems and right now the way the economy is, thats not how it is.
I agree with Tiffany when she says that us teens aren't the only ones that have to overcome obstacles. As teenagers we tend to think only of ourselves but so many more people, especially adults, have it so much worse than we do.
I don't agree with Marissa when she says that the problems today don't apply to yesterday. People back then worried about the same things we do. They worry about whether or not they are going to be living on the streets or live in a nice house. The women worry about the men they are going to marry and how they look. A lot is the same. Just because they were born in a different century doesn't mean they are completely different people.
There are many obstacle to faced faced today. some of them are physical, like staying out of obesity or building up strength. More physical obstacles are things like feeding your body, illness and disease, and many similar things.
Some other obstacles to be faced today are a little less obvious but sometimes even more difficult to overcome. these include things like peer pressure, self-esteem, habit, influence, etc. All of these obstacles CAN be overcome, with the help of God. :)
Responses i like how gabriel said, "every day some people, with help from God and the will to do good, some people survive." I thnk it was very well stated.
I love how Tiffany compared Zeus to God as the most powerful. (We all know which is the most really :)
I also like how Stephanie pointed out that some obstacles depend on age, such as learning to walk and talk as a baby and such.
I think that people today are confronted by many different obstacles every day. Things like family matter, work problems, and mental strains are common daily problems of human beings. People have obstacles in their path all the time, but it is up to them to confront it, and go about the situation to the best of their ability. I think that when people have obstacles in their way, they should approach it in a positive manner and be optimistic. When you do not approach obstacles in a positive manner, more obstacles will form, and make your life more difficult. It is more simple to go about it thinking positively, because it will make the obstacle that much easier to overcome.
I agree with gabrield. I also believe that the obstacles in this day and age can be very detrimental to people around the world. People always struggle to overcome obstacles, but it is those true people who hold perseverence with pride and strive to overcome obstacles and succeed.
I disagree with marissas. I think that obstacles today, although menial looking, can cause mental strain and many other difficulties. I think that obstacles today take a whole persons being and mind to overcome them and strive to succeed.
I agree with Stacy because i too emphasize heavily on mental strain being a main obtsacle. A person should always try to calm and clear their mind. A person's mind is something someone should always be very careful with. If a person is not careful, their mind can strain and then their main priority is to clear it, because without a clear mind, it is very difficult to carry out common daily tasks.
In today's world, everybody - as in children, teenagers, adults, and elders - has problems to face that must be overcome at one point or another. These problems may be small and some may be more serious, but either way they are all still problems. Some examples of problems with people in different age groups are as follows: Children have to worry about leaving their parents' sight for the first time on their first day of school. Teenagers have to worry about keeping their grades high while maintaining a good relationship with their friends and, in some cases, with their boyfriend or girlfriend. Adults have to worry about keeping their jobs while taking care of their families that they see every day. Elders have to worry about the fact that they aren't as young as they used to be, so taking part in certain activities may start becoming difficult. So everybody in the world faces different obstacles, no matter what age group, race, religious beliefs, or ethnic backgrounds they may have. Obstacles are just a matter of life, and we must learn to deal with them.
I agree with Gabriel that today's obstacles "are not as physically demanding as Odysseus's, but they are almost as impossible."
I agree with Marissa that today's common obstacles don't really compare to other obstacles that people had to overcome in the past. There are always going to be problems regardless, but in today's world, it's much easier to get by than it was in the past.
People today have to overcome many obstacles both physically and mentally. People now have to cope with deiseases such as cancer, not to mention teens have to also cope with the addiction of drugs, peer pressure, and sex. Every day more and more obstacles are being made for people now in days. Some avoidable and some yet impossible to avoid even by strong will, but in the end it comes down to the peoples decision wether to overcome an obstacle or not. Responses: GabrielD: I agree with you because some obstacles are unavoidable
marissas: I dont agree with her because she states only specific obstacles which are not true
stefanieG: I agree with her because she states the fact that obstacles are both mental and physical
people today have many obstacles to overcome. especially how things are with the economy now and things. the obstacles dont have to be that big but they can still be big wihout having to. i know that doesnt make alot of sense but for example. a single mom that works two jobs and has two kids and still finds time to take them to soccer practice thats an abstacle. or a teacher thts making minimum wage but hads to feed her kids her family and pay the rent. thats a obstacle too

I agree with Tiffany in the fact that premarital sex is a major obsacle thats faced more and more everyday.
I agree with gabriel because mental illnesses are major obstacles that one has for mostly all his life.
I agree with tiffany again in the fact that you can get through any obstacle through god ,if u just pray .

Some examples of problems with people in different age groups are as follows:
Children have to worry about leaving their parents' sight for the first time on their first day of school.
I agree with Don that obstacles should be confronted in a positive and optimistic manner.
Responses:
GabrielD: I agree with you because some obstacles are unavoidable
marissas: I dont agree with her because she states only specific obstacles which are not true
stefanieG: I agree with her because she states the fact that obstacles are both mental and physical
people today have many obstacles to overcome. especially how things are with the economy now and things. the obstacles dont have to be that big but they can still be big wihout having to. i know that doesnt make alot of sense but for example. a single mom that works two jobs and has two kids and still finds time to take them to soccer practice thats an abstacle. or a teacher thts making minimum wage but hads to feed her kids her family and pay the rent. thats a obstacle too
